Was anyone else as utterly disappointed with the SAG awards as I was last night?
I always get so excited when awards season starts and, frankly, the fashion at the Golden Globes killed it! There was good, there was bad, there was actress wearing a chinese paper lantern! It was utterly fabulous!
Maybe everyone felt bad that Joan Rivers made fun of their black bike shorts underneath white lace and sparkle eagles at the last show, so they went tame this round.
Case in point: Michelle Williams. Everyone voted her one of the best dressed and, frankly, it wasn’t bad, but it was just so typical. How many times have we seen MW in a cap-sleeved lace sheath dress, hmm? How about here, and here, and, oh, here again. Mind you, these all came in the first page of google image search results.
Other fashion yawns: Angelina Jolie in a black slinky dress. Giuliana Rancic in overly-textured fabric. Sophia Vergara is a bust-enhancing body con. I’ve seen these dresses on you women 1,001 times. Jesus. Give it up.
The only dress that actually made me “ooh” was Emma Stone in Sara Burton’s pre-fall 2012 for Alexander McQueen.
Cross your fingers that everyone will start digging into crazy again for the Academy’s.
In 1933, F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote his daughter a letter. It’s quite lovely. The transcript follows.
“Things to worry about:
Worry about courage
Worry about cleanliness
Worry about efficiency
Worry about horsemanship
Things not to worry about:
Don’t worry about popular opinion
Don’t worry about dolls
Don’t worry about the past
Don’t worry about the future
Don’t worry about growing up
Don’t worry about anybody getting ahead of you
Don’t worry about triumph
Don’t worry about failure unless it comes through your own fault
Don’t worry about mosquitoes
Don’t worry about flies
Don’t worry about insects in general
Don’t worry about parents
Don’t worry about boys
Don’t worry about disappointments
Don’t worry about pleasures
Don’t worry about satisfactions
Things to think about:
What am I really aiming at?
How good am I really in comparison to my contemporaries in regard to:
(a) Scholarship
(b) Do I really understand about people and am I able to get along with them?
(c) Am I trying to make my body a useful instrument or am I neglecting it?
With dearest love,
Daddy”

My dear friend Dan will be running a half marathon to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma society this March. He’s been doing a kick-ass job running lately, even through this super chilly winter. It would be great if you could help him reach his goal of raising $1000!
Here’s what Dan has to say about it:
“Please help support me and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society as I train to run a half marathon. This endeavor is in honor of my mother, Ania, who was diagnosed with lymphoma in the summer of 2005, as well as the many others who are affected by this and other cancers. Running a half marathon is not something I ever thought I’d be able to do, but neither was watching somebody so close to me fight this much tougher battle.
I’m not usually one to ask for money, or, to be honest, for help in general. But with this, your help, support, and encouragement really mean a great deal to me. I have set both a fundraising goal for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, as well as a goal for myself—to run the ENTIRE half marathon.
With respect to the larger goal, I have a mission-to help find cures and more effective treatments for blood cancers. To accomplish that mission, I’m participating in a sports endurance event as a member of The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Team In Training. Like the other members of TNT, I will be raising funds to help find cures and better treatments for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma. I’m improving the quality of my life by participating and with your support, I can help improve the quality of life for patients and their families as well.
Please make a donation in support of my efforts with Team In Training and help advance the research for cures.”
Let’s help him out, guys!
Not for nothin’, this is a fantastic correlation.
The “pizza principle” holds that the price of a slice of pizza and the fare of a single ride on the subway have inflated at equal rates since 1960. “Don’t ask why. It simply is so, and has been for decades.”
Zooey Deschanel files for divorce from Ben Gibbard?
Oh, how sad. The next Death Cab album is going to be amazing. *Fist pump*
Some of my personal favorites:
Virginia Woolf
The novel takes place over the course of twenty four hours, during which Bella is painting a portrait of Edward and reflecting on how her femininity circumscribes her role within 20th century society.
Cormac McCarthy
In the opening scene, Edward dashes Bella’s head against a rock and rapes her corpse. Then he and Jacob take off on an unexplained rampage through the West.
James Joyce
Edward’s rapacious love for Bella reflects the way globalism has pillaged Ireland. It’s entirely written in Esperanto, with sections in untranslated Greek, except for Chapter 40, which is inexplicably rendered as a script page from the musical The Book of Mormon.
Haruki Murakami:
Bella has sex with Edward, who is half a ghost. Jacob is a talking cat. Most of the prose is given over to descriptions of Bella making pasta.
And now for my own edition:
Margaret Mitchell
Edward runs away to start an under-cover blood trade for vampires along the Eastern seaboard. Bella marries Jacob. Jacob dies. Bella marries another vampire, he dies. Bella marries a werewolf, he dies. Edward and Bella meet years later, he still doesn’t give a crap. All the while, everything’s burning and nobody’s happy.
I am beyond excited about the Christmas gift my parents got for me. They gave me a travel voucher that I can use for a plane ticket/ hotel/ etc this year.
I’ve had so much fun thinking about where I’d like to go. I’m seriously considering going on a solo vacation— I’ve never done that and I think it would be really relaxing and, I know this sounds strange, but empowering. I’ve always wanted to see the Pacific Northwest and Portland has been on my list of places to see for years. I’d also like to hike Mount Whitney— a hop, skip, and jump away from P’land.
Another idea: I have a friend who just moved to Barcelona. Also, I just applied for a SkyMiles credit card and if you spend X$ in the first month, you get 50K miles, which is enough for an international flight. Maybe I’ll score a flight to Spain and stay with friends and use my travel voucher for intra-European flights and hostels.
Man, I can’t stop planning vacations in my head. I think I’m having more fun fantasizing than I will on the trip!
A long December and there’s reason to believe/
Maybe this year will be better than the last
